GSA MEETING MOVED TO APRIL 26 (WEDNESDAY)
Date: Wednesday, April 26, 2006 (Please note change in date from
the initial announcement of April 11)
Time: 7:00 P.M.
Venue: President's Dining Room University Commons
Special Item on the Agenda: The nominations for Herberg, Thayer and
student awards
April

NOMINATIONS FOR HERBERG AND THAYER AWARDS NOW OPEN
For your calendars,
The last GSA Meeting for the school year will be on Tuesday, April
25, 2006. At that time we will be nominating faculty and staff for
the Herberg and Thayer awards, respectively. [In addition, beginning
with this year, the association has agreed to an additional award
- (yet to be named) - that will honor a graduate student for dedicated
service on behalf of the graduate student body.]
As in the past, the procedure for nomination for faculty must be
an area decision. The convenors are responsible for carrying out the
procedure (see GSA Constitution). In order to nominate your candidate
a member from the area (besides the convenor) must attend the meeting
and read a prepared statement that the area has written in support
of that particular faculty member. The Steering Committee members
will then vote.

SPECIAL MEETING MINUTES
Last February 8, about fifty students attended a special meeting
with the grad and theo deans and Professor Stephen Moore about the
proposed relocation of the governance of the graduate programs in
religion from the Caspersen School to the Theological School. Below
you will find the minutes of that meeting. They are primarily for
those of you who were unable to be present, so that you may know what
was said. According to Professor Moore, he will be happy to try to
answer any further questions that you may have after reading the report.

GDR STUDENTS CALENDAR REMINDER: PLEASE MAKE EVERY
EFFORT TO ATTEND THIS IMPORTANT MEETING ON WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 8,
2006 AT NOON IN SEMINARY HALL ROOM 101. LUNCH WILL BE PROVIDED.
Dear
PhD and MA students in religion areas:
As many
of you will already have heard, administration of the graduate programs
in religion will soon be moving from the Caspersen School to the Theological
School. You are invited to attend a meeting on Wednesday, February
8, at noon, in Seminary Hall 101, at which deans from both schools
and the GDR chair will be present to brief you on the move and answer
any questions you may have. Lunch will be provided.
Let us
take the opportunity afforded by this message, however, to relay some
preliminary information to you. During the 2006-2007 academic year,
administration of the religion programs will gradually move from the
Caspersen School to the Theological School. 2006-2007 will thus be
a transitional year. Our goal is that the administrative move be completed
by Fall 2007. You may wish to elect a liaison to represent students
to faculty and administration during the transition period.
The impending
move was initiated by President Weisbuch. The religion faculty, however,
are fully behind it, and have approved it by vote. We believe that
this change makes administrative sense both within the context of
the university and in the representation of the programs to outside
entities. Further, we believe the change will significantly increase
the possibility of securing funding for graduate education at a level
that will allow students to concentrate more fully on their studies.
Let us
hasten to assure you that none of the basic features of your academic
experience will change. You will continue to:
· Have the same academic requirements that you do now
· Have the same comprehensive exam format that you have now
· Have the same dissertation committees that you do now
· Work with the same faculty members that you do now
· When you graduate, your diploma will name the Caspersen School
as the immediate source of your degree, not the Theological School.
What
will change is that the Deans of the Theological School, in conjunction
with the Chair of the Graduate Division of Religion, will be responsible
for the operation of the graduate religion programs. The precise division
of labor is yet to be determined by the faculty.
During
the next eighteen months, the faculty will be working hard to put
administrative structures in place that will safeguard the identity
of the Graduate Division of Religion. Neither the Theological School
deans nor the faculty have any desire simply to fold the GDR into
the Theo School. We are intent on maintaining our vital interdisciplinary
links with the other areas that make up the Caspersen School, and
on ensuring that our academic freedom is not compromised in any way.
It is our hope that the Caspersen School and the Theological School
also collaborate closely on certain initiatives, such as preparing
graduate students for the professoriate.
Sincerely,
James

Stephen Moore
